SCARABEUS research team at City, University of London fully assembled

 

 

This month the latest and final member of the SCARABEUS research team at City joined the group and began his PhD.

 

In total, the research team at City comprises of Prof Abdulnaser Sayma (Principal investigator at City), Dr Martin White (Co-investigator), Dr Mahmoud Khader (Research Associate) and three PhD students, Mr Omar Aqel, Ms Salma Salah and Mr Abdel-Rahman Abdeldayem.

 

City are leaders of work package 3 (Turbomachinery) and are working with the industrial partner Exergy to deliver the design of the turbomachinery components for the SCARABEUS plant.

 

The latest recruit will join the two PhD students who were recruited in the second half of 2019 and are already in the early stages of their research. The three PhD students will be conducting research into important aspects related to turbomachinery design for supercritical power cycles operating with CO2-blends.

 

Mr Omar Aqel will be exploring optimal cycle configurations for supercritical power cycles operating with CO2-blends, including the integration of turbomachinery design methods with cycle simulation and optimisation to enable the simultaneous optimisation of cycle layout, operating conditions and turbine design.

 

Ms Salma Salah will be investigating design and optimisation methods for multi-stage axial turbines for large-scale supercritical power cycles, and their application to the SCARABEUS plant, focussing on mean-line design and 3D shape optimisation methods.

 

Mr Abdel-Rahman Abdeldayem will be investigating loss mechanisms within multi-stage axial turbines for large-scale supercritical power cycles, and characterising the effects of the fluid blend on turbomachinery performance.

April 22nd: Save the date for the SCARABEUS dissemination day at University of Seville!

The SCARABEUS consortium has organised a dissemination day to take place at University of Seville on April 22nd 2020. Co-located with the second progress meeting of the project, this dissemination day will be comprised of two activities: Networking Session on key enabling Concentrated Solar Power technologies in the morning, and Seminar on modelling and simulation of CSP plants in the afternoon.

 

The Networking Session is co-organised by the SCARABEUS and SOCRATCES consortia, both projects funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (sub-programme H2020-EU.3.3. addressing Societal Challenges concerning secure, clean and efficient energy. SOCRATCES makes use of calcium-looping technology to open a new pathway for next generation energy storage in CSP tower plants, technologically feasible, economically viable and sustainable. SCARABEUS relies on blended supercritical Carbon Dioxide used as the working fluid of a new generation of more efficient power cycles tailored to CSP tower plants, enabling a drastic reduction of installation and electricity costs.

 

The first panel in the Networking session reunites high-level representatives of the scientific community, industry and government. The speakers will share their view on the technology gaps to be filled and the foreseen industrial and legislative framework that will be needed to enable a massive deployment of renewable technologies. In the second panel, the coordinators of SCARABEUS and SOCRATCES will introduce the projects and talk with the audience about their main characteristics and objectives.

 

In the afternoon, the partners of SCARABEUS have organised a seminar covering the fundamentals of how to model the performance of Concentrating Solar Power plants using tower (central receiver) technology. The seminar will also include a module on Environmental Life Cycle Assessment, which is a critical aspect of any power generation technology.

Abengoa provides key technology to the new 50 MW solar tower CSP project in China

Located in Haixi, Qinghai Province in Northwest China, Luneng Haixi 50MW Molten Salt Tower CSP Project is a crucial part of 700MW Luneng Haixi Geermu Multi-energy Complement Integration Optimization Pilot Project, which consists of 200MW PV, 400MW Wind, 50MW CSP and 50MW energy storage system (see more here). The turbine was successfully synchronized on September 20th 2019 (see more here).
